What Are Geocaching Games?
Even though geocaching is a great game in and of itself, there are other “games” that can be played alongside. I’m really interested in this right now since ESP Boss & I are in charge of planning a geocaching event for Arizona’s Centennial Celebration in September.
We’re hosting a 3-day event and will be placing 25-30 new caches. Of course, there will be FTF prizes, prizes for finding the MOST new geocaches, and maybe the most miles logged in a single day of caches.
This will be a sanctioned event by the Yavapai County Centennial committee as part of the centennial celebration. And part of what the committee has been charged with (and by extension US) is to get people out exploring Yavapai County.
Personally, I’m looking for a mix of socializing and caching!
Another idea that we’ve been kicking around is to have a secondary game or games that could be played for prizes as well.
I was originally thinking of having a Poker Run but in my research, I’ve come across some other games like:
Geocaching Bingo
A bingo card is created and you check off each square based off different types of caches.
My concern for geocaching bingo is that it seems really involved. Maybe it’s too involved for a 3-day event.
Geocaching Skills Test
Where you would test all the great geoskills you’ve picked up over the years. I attended an event that had a skills test, but I didn’t actually participate. Ideas?
Geo-Ice Breaker
A get-to-know-you type of game where you try to find geocachers who meet XYZ criteria.
Examples might be:
- Don’t live in Arizona
- Traveled over 200 miles to attend
- Have more than 30 hides
- Have more than 700 finds
Readers Weigh In:
- In addition to finding caches, what games would you like to play?
- Has anybody hosted a multi-day event? What types of activities did you offer?
- What is geo-golf? I’ve seen the term but I don’t know what it is!

Geo-Golf. This is a series of 18 holes (hides) each with a different name. The one that we are the owners of are on the Finger Lakes trail in NY. We also have a 19th hole.

did you consider using monopoly as a color property assigned to a new cache and see which groups of property cachers obtain? no need to tell them which is which as you have the master key for when they return. they get playmoney for the values ( bonus if they own all of the colors in a group) and then auction off door prizes accordingly?

I am thinking the bingo is too hard looking and don’t think that our family would participate. (would lose interest for the munchkins) Love the poker run idea.

We had a bingo card at one event – just a lunch event – but the squares were things like your Ice-breaker questions – I had to find someone with over 1,000 caches, someone who’d cached after dark, someone who’d placed more than 50 caches – stuff like that. If you’re interested I’ll type off the squares or e-mail you the card – IF I can find it still…….

I play geo caching clue with my summer school kids and they love it…place all the pieces except on weapon, one suspect and one room in your caches…after they find all the pieces they are left with the solution… (person) with the (weapon) in the ( room)
Good luck

I have seen a game called ammo can toss. Sort of like horse shoes but with an ammo can. You paint a bullseye on the ground with a couple of outter rings and get points for closest to the center. You could have different distances based on age so everyone could play.

Hi Sarah. I’m still working on the geocaching page. The event is in conjunction with the Yavapai County Centennial Committee so I have to get their stamp of approval for each step of the process. It should be posted soom!

@Theodore Seager Okay… So that’s less of a “game” at an event and more of a series of permanent caches?

@steve allen I like this idea. Can you email me some more detailed information? (Or post it!) I don’t think I have all the details straight in my mind.

@Chickadee Girl — after I posted this article, I did some more digging about various ways Bingo could be run. I LIKE the idea of an ice breaker. And Yes, I’d LOVE a copy of your card!

@PC Van Erem — hmm. How long does it take? How many people can play? That IS a possibility. Of course, I was never very good at Clue…

@Buddy I like this idea. Simple, fun, easy to set up and easy to score. I’ll put this in the hopper for ideas. Thanks!

We play “GPS throw” with a old GPS that we bought at a thrift store for $5.00.
Prizes for the nearest to the flag. We also have a log roll with prizes for the quickest and the tightest.

@Bill — Great idea! Kinda like horseshoes but safe and geared towards geocachers.
